Who I Am in Christ: Rebuilding My Identity Beyond What I Do
There was a time when I didn’t realize how much of my identity was tied to what I did.
Being a mom.
An educator.
A wife.
A business owner.
All good things. God-given roles, even.
But somewhere along the way, those roles quietly became the way I measured my worth.
If I was doing well in them, I felt confident.
If I wasn’t, I felt like I was falling short.
And I didn’t even notice how exhausting that was… until I started to feel it.
When Identity Becomes Performance
I think a lot of us live here without realizing it.
We build our identity around:
how much we accomplish
how well we show up
how others perceive us
And without meaning to, we start living in a cycle of proving instead of being.
Proving we’re enough.
Proving we’re doing it right.
Proving we can hold everything together.
But the truth is, that kind of identity will always leave you tired.
Because it’s built on something that can shift at any moment.
What God Has Been Re-teaching Me
This season, through slowing down, choosing rest, and letting go of what no longer aligns, God has been gently bringing me back to something deeper.
Who I am… before I do anything.
Not because of my roles.
Not because of my productivity.
Not because of how well I hold it all together.
But because of Him.
Who I Am in Christ
I’m learning to anchor myself in truth instead of performance.
That I am:
Chosen (1 Peter 2:9)
Loved (1 John 4:19)
Made new (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Anointed with purpose (Isaiah 61:1)
Held, even when I feel undone
And none of that changes based on my output.
Letting Identity Lead, Not Follow
For so long, I lived like my identity followed what I did.
But now I’m learning:
Identity should lead.
I don’t rest so I can prove something.
I rest because I’m already held.
I don’t say no because I’m failing.
I say no because I’m aligned.
I don’t have to strive to become enough.
I already am…through Christ.
Why This Changes Everything
When your identity is rooted in Christ:
You stop chasing validation
You stop overcommitting to feel worthy
You start making decisions from peace, not pressure
You begin to live aligned instead of overwhelmed
And slowly, the weight lifts.
If you’ve been feeling stretched thin…
If you’ve been questioning your worth based on how much you’re doing…
If you’ve been trying to hold everything together…
This is your reminder:
You are not your roles.
You are not your productivity.
You are not what you accomplish in a day.
You are who God says you are.
And that is more than enough.
Where have you been tying your identity to what you do instead of who you are?
